Just played Left 4 Dead, source engine -based multilayer game on my PC. It has something new to fps-concept, you can play as zombies too :o There's option to play versus mode, so the players divide in two teams randomly. So here's quick review for Left 4 Dead.
The survivors (human team, usually 4-8 players) must reach safe house at end of the map. The infected must prevent this by attacking them. In the map there's lots of NPC -zombies which attack to survivors when they come close. The NPC zombies die after taking bullet or two, and they don't make much damage. But in large hordes they are dangerous and can slow down movement significantly.
Survivors get more ammo, better weapons, pipe bombs, health packs etc. along the way to safe house. The infected team (4-8 players) get one of the three characters: Boomer, hunter, smoker. Boomer can vomit (shoot) players from small range. Vomit makes them view messy and attacks horde to them. Hunter can leap huge distances and when leaped to survivor, she/he will immobilize because hunter begins to rip his chest off. Survivor will be dead if some other survivor doesn't help. Smoker shoots his tongue to far away from him. If the tongue hits survivor, smoker will pull tongue back in and survivor too. You can imagine that survivor will be in great trouble if smoker gets him near the window and starts pulling him out of it. There's also tank, what usually spawns 1-2/map. Tank is basically very strong and lasts huge amount of hits. Teamwork is necessary to take tank down.
Maps are quite large, but there's only 4 campaigns, all campaigns include 5 maps. You'll get familiar with the maps quite fast, what is a shame. But it offers quite nice team play effect, and it's fun to play irregularly.
Recommended.
